No to the new Surry Coal Plant
January 22nd, 2009
Today, Brian stood on the steps of the Department of Environmental Quality and pledged to stop a proposed coal-fired power plant in Surry, Virginia.
We're asking you to stand with Brian and say "no" to the Surry plant and tell your friends. Today, Brian stood on the steps of the Department of Environmental Quality and pledged to stop a proposed coal-fired power plant in Surry, Virginia.
We're asking you to stand with Brian and say "no" to the Surry plant and tell your friends.
Brian recognizes the threat of global warming, and he knows that investing in renewable energy will protect our planet and create thousands of jobs. That's why he stood against a polluting coal plant today. He has asked the Department of Environmental Quality to launch an investigation into the emissions from this proposed plant.
Brian was joined by Mark Warner's former Department of Environmental Quality head and representatives from the Virginia League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club and the Virginia Interfaith Center.
The simple fact is that Virginia cannot afford to threaten the health of the millions of Virginians who live within 50 miles of the proposed plant or further damage the Chesapeake Bay's vulnerable ecosystem. A new coal plant in Surry would contradict our commitment to cleaner, safer forms of energy, and it's time for a 21st century approach to energy in Virginia. Make your voice heard today.

"2009 should be the year that we make unprecedented commitments to clean, renewable energy that can preserve our planet and create thousands of new jobs all over the Commonwealth." - Brian Moran

January 23rd, 2009 at 09:00 AM Great political rhetoric! You need to tell the citizens of this great Commonwealth where they get alternative power and what cost they will assume in making the change. By the way there is not any conclusive evidence that CO2 emmissions cause global warming. It may even cause global cooling because of the increase in cloud cover. Your political correctness lost one vote here!
January 25th, 2009 at 12:01 AM Congratulations to Brian for taking this courageous stand (despite the ill-informed anti-science views of flat-earthers like Rutherford Moore!). I hope Brian will go further and also promise to withdraw the permits for the Wise Co. Power Plant. It's time for Virginia to embrace 21st Century energy efficiency and renewable energy and stop destroying Class A wind sites with mountain top removal mining!
January 25th, 2009 at 06:30 PM Thanks for your strong stand on energy to save Virginia money and to save Virginian's our future health and safety. I hope your stand on the Surry plant can be expanded to stopping the rush to put the Wise Co plant online...we can meet our energy needs with energy efficiency and without destroying the beauty and health of SW Virginia.
January 27th, 2009 at 01:54 PM Just as President Obama has made a strong stand on the environment by turning around Bush's stand on blocking more stringent auto emission standards of states, it is heartening to have Brian Moran as a strong advocate for the environment here in Virginia, and to take the politically difficult step of addressing issues head on of which others fear to speak. I am very pleased to give my full support to Brian!
