Meet and Greet in Loudoun

JUNE 30TH, 2008

An excited crowd gathered this morning at Tuscarora Mill in downtown Leesburg to meet Brian. Included among the attendees were Delegate David Poisson, Senator Mark Herring, and former Congressman Bill Alexander. The meet and greet was hosted by Dean Read and Dave Culbert.

Delegate Moran spoke about Northern Virginia's struggles with transportation. Drawing on his personal experience running a business, Moran emphasized how the congestion crisis affects businesses statewide. He called for bipartisan cooperation in Richmond during the current special session. In addition, he talked about the importance of education in the growing global marketplace and how we must continue to provide a quality education to all Virginians – pre-K thru Graduate school.

Leesburg Today covered the event:

For the problems of Virginia's transportation network to be solved, residents and leaders from across the state must work together, Del. Brian Moran (D-46) told members of the Business and Citizens Political Action Committee this morning. Moran is running for governor in 2009.

"We're all in this together," Moran said. "We call ourselves a commonwealth. We have to work together."

At the inaugural breakfast of BAC PAC, Moran came to address the issues of business and education, the top topics for the new committee. But what started as a two-prong talk ultimately led to a discussion of the problems with transportation, as members asked, in the face of another unsuccessful special session, what needs to be done to help Northern Virginia drivers.

"All 140 of us, 40 in the Senate and 100 in the House, have our own plan," Moran said. "But at some point we have to realize we're stronger together than we are apart."

On Sunday, Delegate Moran joined over 60 Falls Church Democrats at their annual Jefferson Jackson Pot Luck Dinner. It was keynote by a familiar face, Congressman Jim Moran.

Team Brian Moran Runs for the Cure

JUNE 9TH, 2008

The staff of Virginians for Brian Moran participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on the National Mall in Washington, D.C, on Saturday. Over half of Delegate Moran’s staff joined “Team Moran” for the annual run/walk to help find a cure for breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 182,460 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2008 alone. This is the second year in a row that Moran’s staff has participated in the walk.

“I’m proud of the members of my staff who stepped forward to help,” said Delegate Moran. “Too many families are affected by breast cancer, and it’s going to take the private and public sectors working together to find the cure.”

Pictured are Lauren Decot, Kamlesh Nihalani, Rosemarie Clouston, Dominic Gabello, Julienne Uhlich, and Brett Schenker. Annalia Glenn (not pictured) also participated but had to leave for the runners’ start line before the picture was able to be taken.

Defending Kaine

JUNE 8TH, 2008

The Daily Press recently featured a letter from Brian pointing out the absurdity of Morgan Griffith’s attack’s on Gov. Kaine in a May 22 article.

I was disappointed to read Del. Morgan Griffith’s article attacking Gov. Tim Kaine (“Governors and their promises,” May 22). Griffith, the House Republican leader, didn’t propose any solution to the traffic problem that makes it hard for families to get home and businesses to function. He did not come up with any new ideas to give people relief from rising property taxes and help them stay afloat in these tough economic times.

The House Republican leadership continues to tell people that government is the problem – then they seek to make their claim come true.

Kaine has lived up to his promise. He has led in a fiscally responsible way – reducing government waste, providing the services we need and cutting taxes in a fiscally responsible manner. He offered a proposal to reduce property taxes on stretched homeowners by up to 20 percent – Republicans blocked the proposal. When he has offered a solution for our transportation crisis, Republican leadership – Griffith chief among them – had nothing to offer but knee-jerk partisan opposition.

We work best when we work together. As we grapple with the congestion crisis facing Virginia, traffic in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, and unsafe roads and bridges across the state, we need real solutions. Kaine has put a solution on the table –– he should be commended. Griffith seems to be more interested in the same Washington-style politics where you tell everyone who’s to blame and divert attention from your own failures.

The voters of Virginia are too smart for that.
