Brian's Concession Speech
June 10th, 2009
Transcript:
This isn't exactly the evening I was hoping for, but we had a great race, and I know this: it was a spirited campaign but because of this primary Creigh Deeds is now an invincible candidate running for the fall!
I woke this morning to the sounds of thunder, we're going to go to bed tonight with the sounds of thunder of this Democratic party and we're going to win it in November and keep a democrat in the governor's office.
I've known my friend Creigh Deeds, Creigh and I sat together for six years. Maybe because of those six years some of my positions rubbed off on him and that's why he's such a great candidate.
He called me tonight and said, "I can't do this without you Brian." and I told him, "Creigh, you're going to have me by your side, we're going to work as hard as we possibly can and we'll win in November."
We ran on issues of the environment, to say no to offshore drilling. We ran on issues: the importance of the environment, to our kids' future, to the importance clean air and clean water, and no to a new coal plant in Surry because we can insure a greater economic viability by investing in wind and solar, and clean alternative energy sources. We also ran on insuring every singe Virginia child has an opportunity in this great commonwealth. And we ran for this great commonwealth making sure we provided equality to every single Virginian. We ran on the right issues, we ran a great campaign.
I look around and I see folks from a long time ago, I'm not going to go through the whole list because I might get a little emotional, you know how I am, but thank you so very very much. I was introduced by our wonderful Congressman from the 8th congressional district.
Before I get to my best friend and partner in all of this, I see many of the elected officials who stood by my side, from the house of delegates. Thank you, I will miss you guys. To all those local elected officials I see in the crowd, you stood with me in a primary and I know that is difficult to do and I will forever-ever be grateful.. I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it, but we'll call come together come--come now! Come together and work together and make sure we have a democrat in the governor's office. I do appreciate you all standing with me and supporting me.
With results today, now I know really which name should have been on that ballot: Karyn Moran! And of course these little guys, you're going to have to go to school tomorrow guys...they were hoping for a little late celebration.
Let me also thank the campaign. Mame Reilly, the campaign chair. Andrew Roos, the campaign manager, and the entire staff, and Jesse Ferguson, he's been with me so long. All of you, we have so many wonderful volunteers. I see the "terrific trio," I called you all today, Frank Anderson and Todd Smyth and Herb Smith, you guys are just great.
I thank family who has come down, seven kids, guys you know this, I might get choked up on this one. My Dad was a football coach, and he said, "You know, you leave it all on the football field and you play every single down as though it was your last." Ladies and gentlemen, if at the conclusion of that game you played every down as if it was your last, win or lose you can hold your head high. I say to you, we can hold our heads up high tonight! We left nothing on the field, we worked as hard as possible, together we worked so hard and I thank each and every one of you. Let's get started tomorrow and do the work that we need to win in November! Thank you all very much!

Statement on 65th Anniversary of D-Day
June 6th, 2009
“Today, we celebrate one of the greatest triumphs of the greatest generation,” Moran said. “Those who stormed beaches on that fateful day, 65 years ago, built a beachhead of freedom and democracy that has endured to this day. We owe untold gratitude to that generation and to those who served. Today, I respect, honor and thank those who bravely fought for our nation.”
Brian Moran has a 20-year record of fighting for the people of Virginia. He was Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus and a Delegate from Alexandria City and Fairfax County. Prior to that, he served as a prosecutor in Arlington County.

Join Me in the Race
June 2nd, 2009
A few weeks ago I had the chance to be back in Fairfax County, where I was raised, to run in a 5k race with my daughter. The race is part of Girls On the Run, a character building and self esteem program for girls in the 3rd through 5th grades. (girlsontherunofnova.org) As coach for my daughter’s team, I help teach how setting good goals and working hard pays off.
There were over 6000 people running in the race at Fair Oaks Mall, but because I’ve been campaigning and traveling with Brian’s campaign so much, I haven’t had much time to train and exercise myself – at least not nearly as much as I should have to run a 5k! And so while the girls were doing great, I was ill prepared for the race and I can tell you it was the longest 3.1 miles I have ever run. However, I committed to our daughter that I would run this race with her and we did it. In fact we crossed the finish line holding hands. And it occurred to me as we ran that last half mile and the people were cheering and we were crossing that finish line together, holding hands, that our daughter embodies her father’s vision and ideals for this Commonwealth. You see, it would have been easy for her to run ahead and leave me behind, but she didn’t… she helped me get across, too. And Brian will not leave anyone behind either. He won’t leave the 200,000 children who don’t have health care behind, or the families who have no dental care behind or the families who are struggling in this very difficult economy. He will not leave these people behind because he is the one who has been fighting for them all of them the past twenty years. I added 10 minutes to her race time because I was slower….she ran next to me the entire time. But we both got there. Brian has been running with the hardworking families in our Commonwealth for 20 years, leading the way on the environment, education, and putting people back to work.
I know you have a choice in candidates on June 9th, but please know that we ask for your vote and are humbled by your support. Let’s get to the finish line on June 9th together, so that all Virginians can share opportunity and make VA a better place to work, live and raise a family.
Please join the race and volunteer today!

Brian Moran has proposed a Stimulus Watchdog to make sure that Virginia receives its fair share of federal stimulus funds and to ensure that these funds do not get misused or wasted. This position will have auditing authority, will answer directly to the governor, and will be charged with ensuring accountability for the federal stimulus money flowing into Virginia.
