As a dedicated public advocate, Brian Moran knows that too many Virginians lack health care, are underinsured, or can barely afford the care they receive.
Brian fundamentally believes that every Virginian deserves quality, affordable health care. As governor, he will focus on prevention and expanding coverage. Brian understands that we have a moral obligation and a financial responsibility to ensure that every child has the quality health care they deserve. For Brian this belief is not just a moral one, but one that delivers proven economic benefits as well. Brian will fight to expand access and increase affordability to provide health insurance to those who cannot afford it, and make it less costly for those who already have it.
• Championing Children’s Health Care Brian firmly believes that every child deserves good, quality health care. He worked with Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to insure over 95% of all eligible children in Virginia, and he is committed to finishing the job. Brian opposed President Bush’s veto of children’s health insurance, and as governor, he will continue the fight to ensure that every child in Virginia has quality health care.
• Focusing on Prevention When it comes to working to expand health care availability and affordability, Brian has not just talked the talk, he has walked the walk. Brian Moran made sure that vaccinations for childhood illnesses were required for all school children and fought to ban smoking in public areas, places like hospitals and restaurants. He believes that preventing illness and promoting healthy lifestyles will save Virginians money, prevent runaway insurance costs, and keep Virginians healthy. That is why, as governor, Brian will make reducing infant mortality and obesity a top priority.
• Expanding Access Brian’s long history of fighting for better and more accessible health care extends to all areas of our diverse Commonwealth. He has successfully worked to expand health care for pregnant women in Virginia, and as governor, he is committed to fixing Virginia’s shortage of nurses and expanding access to rural dental care.
• Women’s Reproductive Rights Brian believes that a woman, in consultation with her doctor, should have the right to make her own health care and reproductive decisions. He has consistently opposed unconstitutional infringements on a woman’s right to choose.
• Investing in Long Term Care Brian fundamentally believes that every Virginian deserves the opportunity to age with dignity in their own home. That is why he championed incentives to increase long term care insurance. As governor, Brian will continue this fight for Virginia’s parents and grandparents.
• Reforming Mental Health Care Last year, Brian joined Governor Kaine to launch the reform of our mental health system and make record investments in community-based care. As governor, Brian will continue working to expanding community-based care.
• Helping Small Businesses As a small business person who had to make a payroll, Brian knows that providing health insurance is often too expensive for small businesses to handle alone. To help ease this burden, Brian supports creating health insurance pools for small businesses to ensure that providing insurance is affordable for every business. Brian has the experience and leadership to get this done.
Governor Kaine recognized Brian’s commitment to affordable and accessible health care when he appointed Brian to the Governor’s Health Care Reform Task Force.
Brian laid out his commitment and vision for better rural health care in an op-ed published by the Bristol Herald Courier in August, 2008: http://www.brianmoran.com/2008/9/26/more-must-be-done-to-provide-better-rural-health-care.
