Military & Veterans

As a friend of our men and women in uniform, Brian Moran understands that in our commonwealth and our country, our Armed Forces are under tremendous strain. From a new generation of combat veterans to an over-worked National Guard, Virginia faces tremendous challenges.

Brian understands that we have a duty to respect the sacred bond between our government and those who protect this nation. In Virginia, we have a special relationship with our military. More than anywhere else in this country, we all have connections to service members and veterans through our families, schools and places of worship. From the Pentagon to the Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia plays a critical role in protecting our country. Brian fundamentally respects Virginia’s proud military tradition and vows to work tirelessly to give our military personnel and our veterans the support they deserve.

Supporting the Virginia National Guard and Reserve Brian has fought for a veterans’ and military personnel’s bill of rights to protect the financial security of those Virginians called to active duty. He worked to create tax exemptions for members of the Guard and Reserve activated into service and expand supplemental pay to state employees called up to active duty. He also fought to give Virginia’s National Guard access to the state government life insurance program. As governor, Brian will continue championing these and other initiatives to give our military personnel the support they deserve.

Strengthening our Military Brian will fight to strengthen our national security infrastructure. He is working to keep the new Aircraft Carrier in Norfolk and stop its move to Florida. Brian understands that moving the carrier opens the Navy to unnecessary environmental and security risks and wastes taxpayer dollars. He will fight to preserve and expand Virginia’s military installations and make sure they stay right here in the Commonwealth.

Honoring our Veterans Brian knows that our commitment to the brave men and women who serve must continue beyond active duty. That is why he helped create a wounded warrior center for Virginia veterans with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other injuries. He has also supported efforts to increase access for veterans to state universities and expand the Virginia War Memorial. As governor, Brian will continue efforts to strengthen veterans’ services.

Brian’s commitment to and work on behalf of our veterans and military personnel has not gone unnoticed. In April 2007 Brian was recognized by Our Military Kids for his efforts on behalf of Virginia military families: http://www.brianmoran.com/2008/4/8/brian-moran-receives-award-from-our-military-kids.
