Like all parents, Brian Moran is concerned about the safety of Virginia’s neighborhoods and communities. We face new and changing public safety threats that demand 21st century solutions. Given Virginia’s proximity to the nation’s capital and other strategic defense and government assets, we also face significant domestic and foreign threats.
As a former prosecutor, Brian has a proven record of fighting to keep Virginians safe. Brian’s legacy was one of a tough, no-nonsense, hard-nosed prosecutor. Brian is proud of his distinguished record as a strong protector of Virginia’s families, and he will continue this work as governor.
• Protecting Families Brian has led the fight for tougher penalties, new protections and greater investments in law enforcement and first responders. He coauthored some of the nation’s toughest drunk driving and domestic violence laws and fought elder abuse with tougher penalties. As governor, Brian will continue fighting to protect Virginia’s families.
• Fighting for Victims’ Rights As a prosecutor for seven years, Brian consistently stood up for victims in cases ranging from burglary to sexual assault and attempted murder. Brian also witnessed first-hand the often ignored hardships that victims of crime and their families face. That is why Brian pushed a law through the legislature to create work leave for victims of crime and why he is committed to strengthening the rights of victims of crimes.
• Tackling 21st Century Challenges As a prosecutor and a father of two young children, Brian has always been especially impacted by crimes against children. That is why Brian championed Alicia’s Law, which provides additional state police officers more training and new technologies to protect our children from online sexual predators. Brian understands that new technologies also bring new security threats, and Brian has vowed to fight tirelessly to protect Virginians against identity theft, cyber security issues, and other emerging threats.
• Recidivism and Reentry Brian’s unique experience as a prosecutor has taught him that government can play a vital role in preventing crime by preventing repeat crimes. That is why, while Brian supports Virginia’s tough crime laws, he also understands that we need to be both tough and smart. Brian supports drug courts, job training, drug treatment, and other re-entry programs to help ex-offenders stay off the streets and reduce recidivism rates.
• Ensuring Commonwealth Preparedness Brian was part of the team that created Virginia’s first comprehensive homeland security and disaster response plan. Brian knows that securing Virginia’s ports, the National Capital Region, and all of Virginia’s strategic assets is critical to our security. As governor he’ll make this a top priority. Brian understands that to ensure our security, we must focus both on disaster prevention and emergency response. That’s why he will make sure that Virginia’s first responders are the best-equipped, best-trained and best-supported in the nation.
Brian’s depth of experience is unmatched. He has served on the Virginia Crime Commission, the Secure Virginia Panel, and has been recognized by many groups for his work to keep Virginians safe and support those who protect Virginia’s families.
Brian was humbled to receive an award from Our Military Kids in April 2008 for his support of the children of Virginians who are deployed and of the severely injured National Guard and Reserve personnel: http://brianmoran.com/2008/4/8/brian-recognized.
Brian’s commitment to keeping Virginians safe is also illustrated by those who have recognized him for his service to the people of the Commonwealth. Brian has been named the Virginia Sheriffs Association’s Legislator of the Year, and has twice received the Victims and Witnesses of Crime Legislative Award. Brian has also received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Legislator of the Year award for his work to strengthen penalties against drunk driving: http://www.maddnova.org/newsletter/august.
