As a leader and fighter for Virginia’s safety and quality of life, Brian Moran knows that today too many Virginians waste countless hours stuck in traffic, hours that could be spent productively at work or at home with their families. This affects our quality of life and our economy. To make matters worse, much of Virginia’s infrastructure is aging and falling into disrepair.
Brian is a strong leader with a proven record of fighting for comprehensive transportation solutions that invest in building roads, expand options for mass transit, and improve rail. As someone who has raised a family and run a business in Northern Virginia, Brian knows that the residents of our most congested regions urgently need relief, but he also knows that any comprehensive transportation plan must include all regions of the state with fair, balanced solutions. That is why Brian will fight for a comprehensive transportation solution that is statewide, sufficient and sustainable.
• Jump-Starting Our Economy Brian knows that fixing our transportation problems is not just a transportation and quality of life issue - it’s about the economy too. Smart investments in roads and infrastructure will allow Virginia to create more than 35,000 jobs and ease traffic congestion by investing in our transportation infrastructure. This would allow the Port of Hampton Roads, Dulles Airport, and our other strategic assets to grow and bring good, high-paying jobs to Virginia.
• Investing in High-Speed Rail and Mass Transit Brian knows that to compete in the 21st century economy, relieve congestion and protect our environment, Virginia must invest in high-speed rail and expand mass transit. He understands that we need forward-looking solutions to this transportation crisis.
• Fixing Roads and Bridges Brian knows that creating a 21st century transportation system will require fixing our infrastructure. It’s about our economy, our families’ safety, and it’s just common sense. Virginia has more than 1,700 bridges that are structurally deficient, and Brian is committed to investing in road and infrastructure maintenance to keep Virginians safe and create jobs.
• Building an Electronic Infrastructure Brian understands that a 21st century economy requires 21st century electronic infrastructure. That is why he supports expanding rural broadband deployment and wireless (WiFi) access to the Internet. Brian also supports expanding telecommuting and tele-work to help reduce traffic congestion and our dependence on foreign oil.
• Implementing Smart Growth and Land Use Planning Brian knows that we can’t solve our transportation problems by simply building more roads. He recognizes that we must link transportation and land use planning, and he will continue pressing for policies that protect the integrity of our communities and reduce sprawl. As governor, Brian will require that smart growth planning be a critical part of any comprehensive transportation solution because it will cut down on traffic, strengthen our economy, and help protect our environment.
Brian advocated for greater investment in transportation in an op-ed that was published in the Washington Times in July, 2008: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/28/virginia-transportation/.
