Women’s Rights & Choice

As a prosecutor and legislator, Brian Moran fought to put those who commit violence against women behind bars. As a legislative leader, he consistently fought to uphold a woman’s right to choose. Brian has a strong pro-choice record and will take that record and his commitment to women’s rights to the governor’s office.
    • Domestic Violence. As a former prosecutor, Brian has been working to prevent domestic violence for years. Domestic violence presents some of the most dangerous and least talked about challenges we face in Virginia. As a legislative leader, Brian fought for and passed legislation to keep women safe from stalkers, sexual assault and spousal abuse. He also passed legislation to empower victims of crimes to take time off work to attend court proceedings so they can ensure justice is done. And, as governor, Brian will keep working to put a stop to violence against women. • Supporting a Woman’s Right to Choose. Brian has fought to uphold a woman’s right to choose. Over the past decade, he stood up to anti-choice Republicans in the House of Delegates. They have been working to chip away at women’s constitutional rights, but Brian has fought them every step of the way. • Opposing Limitations and Exceptions. Brian has been a consistent ally and champion of choice and has fought the House Republicans as a Delegate and then as a legislative leader. He fought them on informed consent requirements, mandatory 24-hour waiting periods, funding restrictions and limiting access to emergency contraception. And as governor, He will continue to fight efforts to restrict a woman’s constitutional right to choose. • Prenatal Care/Infant Mortality. We have a serious infant mortality problem in Virginia. Richmond’s infant mortality rate is higher than Ukraine’s. Doctors fear that infant mortality may continue to rise because women, especially low-income women, are not getting the prenatal care they need. That’s why Brian will expand health care access and coverage for pregnant women, and work with community and faith-based organizations to educate new parents. We need to support Virginia’s mothers to ensure that our children grow up healthy and strong, and that’s what Brian Moran will do as governor.
Governor Kaine recognized Brian’s commitment to women’s health care when he appointed Brian to the Governor’s Health Care Reform Task Force. Brian has been consistently recognized by NARAL and other women’s groups for his work on these issues and has received several 100% ratings. As governor, he will continue to work with groups that advocate for women and to protect a woman’s right to choose.
